Ski-Doo® Snowmobiles History

 

Ski-Doo® snowmobiles are widely considered one Canada’s most iconic inventions. But how did the brand get its start? This guide from Riserz Rocky will give you the rundown on the early history of Ski-Doo® snowmobiles. 

 

Early Years of BRP

Decades before the first Ski-Doo® Snowmobile hit the market, Canadian inventor Joseph-Armand Bombardier dreamed of creating a vehicle that could float above the snow. He was spurred to action in 1934, when blizzard conditions prevented Bombarider’s son from reaching the hospital in time to avoid dying from complications related to appendicitis. These early Bombardier snowmobiles could fit up to seven people. 

 

A New Direction

In 1948, Quebec’s government passed laws requiring that all roads be cleared of snow. This, naturally, cut into BRP business considerably. The company adapted by making changes to its models and shifting to ATV production. Throughout the 1950’s the company began developing a 1-2 person snowmobile model. Since it was meant to replace dog sleds, this model was named the “Ski-Dog”. However, an error resulted in the iconic Ski-Doo® snowmobile name we know today. Initially, Ski-Doo® snowmobiles were primarily popular among those who needed to be able to reach remote, snow-covered locations like prospectors and surveys. However, sport riders soon adopted the Ski-Doo® snowmobile due to its speed and agility, shifting the overall snowmobile market towards recreational riding.
